Suzie's profile
My artwork explores and celebrates the embedded spiritual elements in the repetitive tasks of everyday domestic practices. I look at the home and the work that creates a home from a traditional perspective. Through the use of materials with unusual or even incongruous properties and textures, I also explore the inevitable humor involved in being a domestic woman and mother.
Domestic work is not only the physical act of housework, such as cleaning and laundry, but also involves a process of transformation – creating order where there was none. The constant cycle of work creates memory and it is through this that knowledge is made and traditions preserved.
Artifacts of domesticity such as sponges, lint or children’s questions provide remnants of past experiences. Through the transformation of these objects and deconstruction of their functionalities, I explore how repetitive domestic activities create, transfer and preserve domestic knowledge.
