Matthew is a Baltimore-based artist. He was born and raised in Columbus, OH , where he rigorously trained at an art-focused high school before concentrating on painting at Washington University in St Louis, followed by graduate study at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. His work has been exhibited in Columbus, OH, St. Louis, MO and New York City.  Over 18 years in Baltimore, he has exhibited at the Creative Alliance (solo exhibition), Morgan State's James E. Lewis museum, Jordan Faye Contemporary and Project 1628 (solo exhibition). Matthew took time off from exhibiting in the formative years of raising two boys (2018-2025), and created a successful parallel career in the world of fine wine, including as a sommlier for the James Beard wine-award-winning Charleston Restaurant, and a manager for Elite Wine Imports. If there is a common thread between these worlds of art and wine, it is that his work attempts an emotive reaction with intellectual depth, much like great wine or a special meal. His paintings and drawings concentrate on powerful figures - they are viscerally wrapped in history, humanity and mythology.
