This solo exhibition is a collection of oil paintings featuring water, sky, and land. All works were created in my studio on Hoopers Island. I work from my imagination only without refence material or initial sketches, as I prefer to allow the intuitive process and memories of places that stay with me to inspire works.

Paintings by MJ Oelke
MEDIUMS: watercolor, oil, acrylic

My first forays into the art world was, like many others, using crayons and watercolor paint. When I discovered puppetry, the skills of painting and especially landscape painting, aided in enhancing my marionette shows with scene painting skills. Painting stuck with me as a lifetime endeavor. I especially like painting watercolor landscapes, and landscapes in general.

Climate Test is a site-specific public art installation created for Art Kiosk in Redwood City, CA to create a dialogue about climate change in the city. The concept for this piece was inspired by Redwood City’s ambiguous motto of “Climate Best by Government Test,” its history as a port for lumber, and the fact that the city is part of Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is typically associated with technology and innovation, but for me it represents the continuous consumption and mining of raw materials from the earth to drive it.
