From a young age, I felt a deep connection to the natural world. Inspired by my father’s encouragement, I spent endless hours outdoors—immersed in the woods, creating inks from flower petals, and crafting small clay animals. My happiest memories are from those summer days, a time of freedom, discovery, and a… more

Flowers - Near and Far

This project is an exploration of the natural world, blending local and distant flora with vibrant oil paints to create a harmonious and evocative visual experience. Through the use of color, texture, and composition, I invite one into a garden that stretches beyond geographical boundaries—where native blossoms intertwine with exotic blooms, bridging distant landscapes and celebrating the universal beauty of flowers.

Local flowers and native ones in our region, speak to a sense of place and connection, grounded in the familiar landscapes we inhabit. These blooms may evoke a nostalgia or sense of home, drawn from personal memories or the rhythms of the changing seasons. In contrast, the inclusion of distant flowers—exotic species that are not typically found in your surroundings—introduces a sense of wonder and discovery.

The harmonious blending of these two worlds—local and distant—creates a dialogue that emphasizes both the diversity and unity of the natural world. Whether the flowers are painted in a delicate, intimate composition or in bold, sweeping clusters, they reflect the way nature transcends borders and brings us together, regardless of where we are.

Wetlands and Marshes

I have always been drawn to marshes with their many types of grasses and animal life.  These paintings are derived from the east coast and shores of Maryland and beyond.

Marshes capture the vibrant, often overlooked life that thrives in these wetland ecosystems. Through the rich texture of oil paints, one can see into a dynamic world of soft, shimmering waters, lush grasses, and the bustling activity of plants and animals that call the marsh home. The marsh is not just a serene natural setting; it is a living, breathing organism where every blade of grass, every ripple in the water, plays a crucial role in the delicate balance of the ecosystem.  Marsh paintings convey an intricate web of biodiversity. The water, reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation, is alive with movement—whether it’s the flutter of a bird’s wings, the ripple caused by an unseen creature beneath the surface, or the way the wind stirs the reeds.  Brushwork allows this movement to resonate across the canvas, with gentle strokes that evoke the ebb and flow of the tides, the sway of cattails, and the quiet, constant hum of life.

The flora is rendered with particular attention to detail. Tall grasses, sedges, and reeds stretch toward the sky, their delicate tips catching the light in varying shades of green, gold, and brown. The soft layers of paint breathe life into the marsh’s dense vegetation, creating a sense of depth that mirrors the complexity of the ecosystem itself. The roots and shoots are interconnected, with some plants rising above the water while others remain submerged, their reflection creating a mirror image on the calm surface below. This duality highlights the adaptability and resilience of marsh plants, which thrive in fluctuating water levels and changing conditions.

The South West

Southwest oil paintings are a vivid celebration of the region's dramatic landscapes, bathed in natural light that plays across vast horizons and rugged terrain. These works capture some of the essence of the Southwest's geological and cultural identity, with a focus on color, light, composition, and the awe-inspiring rock formations.

The palette of Southwest oil paintings is dominated by rich earth tones, vibrant reds, ochres, burnt oranges, and deep umbers that echo the sunbaked desert landscape. Accents of turquoise and cerulean sky provide striking contrast.  The use of bold colors  conveys the warmth and intensity of the desert climate, balancing them with softer pastels to reflect the serene beauty of dusk and dawn.

Light in the Southwest is a subject in itself, often depicted as it filters through canyon walls, casts dramatic shadows across mesas, or glows golden during a desert sunset.   Light often transforms the land, creating a dynamic interplay of highlights and shadows. These effects enhance the emotional resonance of the works, immersing viewers in the Southwest’s luminous atmosphere.

Compositions often emphasize vast, open spaces juxtaposed with towering rock formations. The use of strong horizontals to depict the land and diagonals to guide the eye creates balance and movement within the frame.

Signature rock formations such as spires, arches, mesas, and buttes take center stage, their textured surfaces rendered to showcase their geological grandeur. The interplay of erosion patterns and layered sediment creates intricate details, inviting a deeper appreciation of the land’s ancient history and natural artistry.

Animals

Animal oil paintings are a dynamic and captivating category that showcases the essence of wildlife and domestic creatures through vivid brushstrokes and rich textures. This genre of art often captures the spirit, beauty, and character of animals, whether depicted in natural habitats, close-up studies, or imaginative compositions. From detailed renditions of majestic birds like owls to expressive portrayals of animals in motion, these works resonate with viewers, offering both emotional and aesthetic appeal.

Oil as a medium lends itself exceptionally well to this category due to its versatility and depth. Artists can achieve intricate details, as seen in feather patterns of fur textures, while also conveying atmosphere and mood through layering and blending. The use of light and shadow often plays a pivotal role in bringing animals to life, adding dimension and realism.  For me, painting animals gives me great joy.  I believe the most important part of the portrait is their eyes.  Capture the essence of the eyes and the portrait  finds the spirit of the animal.

I am available for animal portraits.  Please contact me through email [email protected] to discuss specifics

Barns and Farmland - Rural Life

Painting farmland and barns merges the timeless essence of rural life with the expressive qualities of Impressionism. Through a delicate interplay of color, light, and brushstroke, one can capture the serenity and quietude of pastoral landscapes, inviting viewers into a world that feels both familiar and deeply nostalgic.

Brushwork can evoke the fleeting moments of changing light and the atmospheric conditions that characterize rural life. This approach, reminiscent of Impressionist techniques, allows you to convey not just the visual details of the scene, but its mood and rhythm—the way the sunlight dances across the fields, the wind rustling through the crops, or the stillness that settles over the land at dusk.  The palette that is rich and earthy colors can evoke the textures and warmth of the natural world. Golden fields, deep green pastures, and the weathered wood of barns are rendered with a sensitivity to light and shadow that gives each painting a dynamic, almost alive quality.

The barns, often the focal point of your compositions, emerge as symbols of human connection to the land, both steadfast and ephemeral. With careful attention to the weathered surfaces of the structures, you capture the passage of time—the fading paint, the gentle erosion of wood, and the soft patina of years of use. Yet, there is also a sense of vitality, as the barns stand resolutely within the changing landscape, their presence both enduring and transient.  The fields are not depicted with meticulous accuracy but with an looseness that allows the viewer to experience the scene in a more visceral way. The barns and farmland are not just objects within the landscape—they are living, breathing parts of a larger, ever-changing whole. They are an invitation to slow down, to take in the fleeting beauty of the natural world, and to connect with the timeless rhythms of the land.

Ocean View

This collection of ocean-inspired oil paintings captures the ever-changing beauty of coastal landscapes, celebrating the harmonious rhythms of nature. Brushwork creates a nuanced understanding of light and texture and conveys the dynamic interplay between sand, waves, tides, and sunlight.

Each painting immerses the viewer in a moment along the shore, where the soft hues of sand meet the undulating blues and greens of the ocean. Attention to detail highlights the intricate textures of wet and dry sand—some areas glistening under the sun’s rays, others etched with delicate patterns left by retreating tides. These elements evoke the transience of each tide, a reminder of nature’s constant motion.

The waves take center stage, painted with fluid, layered brushstrokes that capture their movement and energy. Crisp whitecaps rise and fall with rhythmic precision, blending into softer foam as they meet the shore. The shimmering light dancing on the surface of the water creates an enchanting interplay of color, reflecting skies that range from tranquil pastels to stormy grays.

The sky and its shifting moods are integral to the collection, their changing light illuminating the ocean and beach in various tones. Golden sunrises, soft midday glows, and the deepening hues of twilight create an emotional backdrop that reflects the rhythms of day and tide.

This collection invites viewers to experience the peace, power, and meditative qualities of the ocean. The paintings resonate with anyone who has stood at the edge of the sea, feeling the timeless pull of the tides and the endless beauty of the horizon. Together, these works celebrate the delicate balance between stillness and movement, capturing the soul of coastal landscapes.

Structures - An Art Form

This collection of oil paintings celebrates the beauty, history, and craftsmanship of architectural structures. From quaint rural cottages to grand historic landmarks, each piece captures the character and soul of buildings in various settings, highlighting the interplay between human creativity and the natural world.

The use of oil paints enhances the textures and forms of these structures, bringing out the intricate details of brickwork, wood, and stone. Sunlight cascades over rooftops and façades, casting soft shadows that emphasize the architectural lines and curves.  Each scene tells a story—not just of the building itself but of the people who inhabit or pass through it, hinting at lives lived within these walls.

These oil paintings invite viewers to appreciate architecture as art, blending the human-made and the natural into harmonious compositions.
