Somewhere Between Chaos and Silence

Somewhere Between Chaos and Silence is a collection of figural work featuring an unconventional incorporation of stoneware, porcelain and light. Painful and malign overgrowths envelope these stoic figures, each experiencing their own conditions of adversity. Their textural forms expose a paradox of the skin–providing protection yet also recording our pain. The illumination of these forms literally “brings light” to their plights, while also expressing tranquility and hopefulness. However, like the paradox of skin, the aesthetically captivating light also blinds us from the disturbing nature of these figures. This collection of work ultimately expresses the contradictory and transient experiences of humanity, balancing between order and chaos.

As Ashtavakra Gita says,

“All things arise,

Suffer change,

And pass away.

This is their nature.

When you know this,

Nothing perturbs you,

Nothing hurts you.

You become still.”
