HOMEWORKHOMEWORK is a web series set in a dystopian America manufactured by an unhinged president. With schools that prize test scores over morals and a media environment that publishes alternative news to preserve an inequitable balance of power, the culture documented in HOMEWORK reflects in many ways the state of our own nation. In its pilot episode, HOMEWORK imagines what our public schools might look like in a near future where even today’s scant political oversight is compromised.

homeroom
Disguised as a podcast, homeroom is a storytelling project reimagining education systems that prioritize collaboration over competition. Using the human-centered design framework, homeroom facilitates the sharing of stories that have shaped our relationships to ourselves and others.
While the first three seasons focused on one-on-one conversations, season 4 focuses on synthesizing what 100+ people have said over the past couple of years. Each episode in season 4 is a 6-7K word essay that makes an argument around one issue that is getting in the way of our education systems producing empathetic citizens driven to change the world.
-
homeroomThe season 4 premiere presented the following argument: our mass education systems (including cultural and familial systems) actively stifle the agency and intrinsic motivation of our children by prioritizing conformity, obedience, and extrinsic validation over independent thinking, curiosity, and self-trust. And not only does this lead to physical and mental health issues, but it also results in people reaching adulthood, lacking the confidence, self-awareness, and resilience needed to find meaning and purpose.
Listen to the episode for the antidote, or navigate to the research paper I published on SSRN (slide 2) to read a more concise solution for this issue and 4 others.

The Homeroom Model: Five Insights for Cultivating Self-directed Learners in the Age of Decentralized Education Systems
Abstract
Modern education systems around the world have inherited many features of the 18th-century Prussian model, including standardized testing, age-based groupings of students, as well as teacher training and curriculum that prepare students for specific economic needs. This paper examines the shifting values and perspectives on education practices around the world. Using purposive sampling to select participants for this ongoing research, initial in-depth interviews were conducted with 45 individuals representing diverse schooling experiences spanning more than 40 years across 6 continents and 24 countries. A preliminary thematic analysis identifies five key reframes essential for meaningful education reform to occur: shifting attitudes on learning from -
