Time Maps 100-299
How do cycles create our lives and surroundings? A living thing can break with the order of its own life and decompose. Other living things may come upon it and find nutrients. The atoms that are myself take the form of a human, and I live within a culture that makes sense of these cycles through a structure we call "time." Time is an attempt at understand the vast structures of our existence. Through my work in the series Time Maps, I invite reflection and imagination into the concept of time.
.The cyclical process of crochet accumulates to create the forms in this series. Raw cotton is spun into a thread. A crochet hook pulls a loop of that thread through another loop to create a stitch. Through slight variations in this process of dying, spinning, and crocheting each Time Map is created.

Blue Mask-ShieldHand spun (drop spindle) cotton yarn, dye, hooks, thread, 7 x 14 x 4 inches, 2020 This mask-shield is used to block out light from the screen that contributes to eye strain. The artist covers the screen with the mask-shield during periods of video meetings that require only listening. An opening at the top of the mask-shied allows for continued use of the camera on the computer, and the bottom edge of the piece stops short of covering the mute and un-mute button in the video chat. The artist calls for reflection on our relationship with digital technologies.
