THE SEAGULL

This original adaptation of Anton Chekhov's THE SEAGULL featured an updated text, minimalist settings, and was staged in-the-round. Ryan Nicotra freely adapted existing public domain translations to create a new script for this specific production, which he also directed.

The cast included Vincent Seadler (Konstantin Gavrilovich Treplev), Amy Parochetti (Nina Mikhailovna Zarechnaya), Stacie Beard (Irina Nikolayevna Arkadina), Brandon Beatty (Boris Alexeyevich Trigorin), Kayleigh Daniels (Masha), Paul Seadler (Sorin), Eric Bailey (Ilya Afanasyevich Shamrayev), Jennifer Hasselbusch (Paulina Andreyevna), Dustin Horsman (Semyon Semyonovich Medvedenko), and Ryan Nicotra (Director/Dr. Eugene Dorn).

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

Faced with the challenge of mounting a production of a well-known (and well-loved play), this production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS by Robert Harling featured a cast of six actresses who built a true community with insightful, brave, and heartfelt dialogue created during the rehearsal process: leading to vulnerable and fresh performances by the ensemble.

Brave New Works Theatre Festival

Under the direction of Ryan Nicotra, the inaugural Brave New Works Theatre Festival produced four new works of theatre: three of which received their world premiere at the Festival. Each piece was given a strict budget and time allotment, but no regulation of content (artists were required to obey the law and honor our agreement with the producing venue). The goal of the Festival is to allow artists to produce their most imaginative and challenging work to date in a setting that allows progressive and experimental techniques to be both manipulated and articulated.

Pieces selected for and produced at the festival included:
-SO WISE SO YOUNG* by Lisa Davidson: a project based on nearly fifty interviews with young adults. The project would go on to tour Baltimore, Silver Spring, and Washington DC in the winter of 2013.

-TRUST* by Joshua Fletcher: a new drama about a deadly game played in humanity's final hours. TRUST is now being developed for a short film)

-DAMNED POETS* by Ryan Nicotra: an exploration of madness in Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, and Isadora Duncan.

-LIKEWISE by Judy Klass: a romantic comedy, post-break-up.

(*Indicates a world premiere production at the Festival, now published in The BOOM Anthology of New Plays: Vol. 1)

THE BALTIMORE WALTZ

This staging of THE BALTIMORE WALTZ by Paula Vogel featured the heavy use of projections, sound/noise punctuation, and fast-paced lighting effects. All three performers were required to learn basic French, German, and Dutch for the production.

This production was directed by Ryan Nicotra.

24HPF

The plays developed during the 24-Hour Play Festival (24HPF) blended fire, immersion, sensory deprivation and the historical Tudor Hall for an exploration of redemption. Five pieces were created, rehearsed, and performed within the 24-hour period. Confessions made and dramatized during these pieces stem from shameful true life experiences of the artistic team. By presenting them to the world, the team was then freed of shame and found redemption in re-imagining and re-writing their personal narratives.

Ryan Nicotra served as a collaborator and coordinator for 24HPF.

Ryan's piece, FOX IN THE TRAP, OR, HOW I LEARNED TO FEEL GOOD YEAH YEAH REAL GOOD was presented in the Gazebo at Tudor Hall. The gazebo, a longtime "gathering" space of sorts for neighborhood teenagers, was covered in soot, broken glass, empty cans and bottles. While inspirational, the space was cleaned out for a safe audience experience.

BEYOND THE HORIZON

This production of BEYOND THE HORIZON by Eugene O'Neill featured a skimmed-down edition of the script, which eliminated problematic passages found throughout the playwright's work. It should be noted that less than 5% of the total play was cut for this production: sections involving Mary, the walking/talking two-year-old daughter, were removed in favor of dangerously higher stakes for the adult characters.

This production was directed by Ryan Nicotra.

The floor of the venue was covered in a thick layer of dying leaves. For a practical necessity, they informed audiences of the immediate location of the play. In the poetic sense, the decaying leaves symbolized the slow fall of the Mayo family clan and loss of fertility, punctuating every step taken by any character with loud crackles.
