Ryan's profile

Ryan Antony Nicotra is a director of classical drama, contemporary plays, and devised works. His works are best classified as a pursuit of the redemption of isolated individuals, and a relentless optimism for reconciliation between cultures. The significant real-life experiences of the artistic team often become an integral part of the development process for any project he leads.

Born and raised in Bel Air, Ryan is the founder and Company Director of The BOOM Theatre Co. He is an alumni of Flagler College. Ryan serves as the coordinator for the BOOM Board of Directors and as an administrator for the company. Most recently, he launched the Brave New Works Theatre Festival in order to produce four new plays by emerging playwrights. In September 2013, he launched the BOOM 24-Hour Play Festival (24HPF), which resulted in five immersive dramas produced on the haunted grounds of Tudor Hall, the former estate of Edwin Booth and his family. The works created in both festivals are now published in The BOOM Theatre Co. Anthology of New Plays: Vol. 1.

In 2013, his directorial credits included STEEL MAGNOLIAS by Robert Harling, THE BALTIMORE WALTZ by Paula Vogel, and BEYOND THE HORIZON by Eugene O'Neill. Due to a late emergency in the rehearsal process, Ryan read the role of Andy Mayo in all six performances of BEYOND THE HORIZON. In the same year, he developed two original pieces: DAMNED POETS, a study of madness in the words of Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, and Isadora Duncan; and FOX IN THE TRAP, OR, HOW I LEARNED TO FEEL GOOD YEAH YEAH REAL GOOD, a music-infused, autobiographical exploration of redemption.

In 2014, Ryan will direct HILLARY: A MODERN GREEK TRAGEDY WITH A (SOMEWHAT) HAPPY ENDING by Wendy Weiner, an original adaptation of THE KING STAG by Carlo Gozzi, and GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES by Rajiv Joseph. He is currently developing a new play, CIRCLE CIRCLE DOT DOT: a love story about polyamorous twenty-somethings seeking purpose and fulfillment, or the next best thing.
