  • Origami

I created the live footage, animations and music for the film, Origami. It was an attempt to evolve and experiment my past film, Rise Up. It was screened on two different occasions—at Area 405 gallery as a part of the Sweaty Eyeball Animation Festival‘s exhibition artists’ screening, and New Works film screening night at 2640 Space.

  • Dissonance
    Dissonance

Dissonance is an installation art. It consists of the series of 9 dolls. The work is flexible to fit the space and dimensions available in an assigned gallery spot.

It has been exhibited at Nocturnal Reflection at Atrium Artspace in June-July, Hands of the Artists in Area 405 in September, and (un)Alter(ed) Ego in Bogus Gallery in October to November in the Station North Arts District in 2025.

This series of dolls is inspired by Ayatori (あやとり)and Kinbaku (緊縛).

Ayatori is a traditional children’s game in which a loop of string is manipulated around the fingers to create a sequence of shapes. In English, it is known as cat’s cradle.

Kinbaku, which translates to “tight binding,” is a Japanese style of rope work that uses simple yet visually intricate patterns. I was introduced to Kinbaku through friends I met recently, and it gradually became a point of artistic curiosity for me.

In April 2025, the Lazarus Center at MICA screened the Japanese documentary Japanese Avant Garde Pioneers, directed by Amélie Ravalec. There, I learned that Kinbaku is now regarded as a form of Avant Garde art. This led me to research its history and the evolution of this practice.

In creating Dissonance, I removed the erotic associations of Kinbaku and instead incorporated structural techniques drawn from Ayatori.

The red, blue, and white yarns represent America. Through this work, I wanted to express my struggle against the stereotypes often placed on Asian women in the United States—stereotypes that attempt to dictate how one should behave or think. Although we are taught that stereotyping is discriminatory, its impact persists. This installation also reflects my acclimation process as a Japanese immigrant, navigating language and cultural transitions, negotiating the suppression of aspects of my Japanese identity, and forging a fusion of American and Japanese cultural heritage within myself.

The process was filled with struggle and turmoil, but it ultimately strengthened me. What once felt restrictive and oppressive has transformed into a source of support—the very structure that sustains me today.

Nocturnal Growth

Nocturnal Growth is the solo exhibition that consists of the experimentation and study of light reflections from a series of projected animations on different textures of materials such as mirrors, glass, fabrics, threads and papers.

Nocturnal Growth implies the growth that takes place in the dark, invisible and quiet places.

The exhibition depicts the nocturnal growth that we go through—the intangible and invisible growth associated with processing and digesting our mental and emotional experiences in solitude in a dark and quiet place when we face ourselves. It is also about the behind-the-scenes efforts and labor I have gone through many times at night in silence while everyone is asleep—all the practice, trial and errors, experiments, and work I have done sacrificing my sleep accumulating into tangible growth over a long period of time.

This exhibition also visualizes my life experiences and lessons learned. The core concept is that what defines us comes from our mental and emotional growth and how we process our life experiences. The race, ethnicity, and social status do not define who we are.

What defines who we are forms from what we go through mentally and psychologically through our experiences. These things shape us and grow us internally unlike physical growth or what we were instilled in our upbringing in our first 15-20 years of life.

Triptych: Implosion, Imbibition & Explosion

This triptych consists of mixed media adhered to the framed canvases. It has been displayed on three different occasions—at Atrium Artspace,  Wide Angle Youth Media  and Havre Arts Collective.

Implosion, 2025
Mirror, paper, acrylic paint on canvas, yarn, glitter, sequins and fabric in repurposed frame
21” x 28” x 3”
This was the first piece I created in the triptych. I aimed to express the internal turmoil—guilt, regret, self-accusation, and feelings of condemnation. These emotions can be transformed into motivation for personal growth and change. However, if I don’t learn to accept them in a healthy way, they can become dangerous, weighing me down and potentially leading to depression.

Imbibition, 2025
Paper, acrylic paint on canvas, glitter, sequins, fabric in repurposed frame
29” x 32” x 4”
Definition of Imbibition: The absorption of one substance by another, particularly the uptake of water by a plant or seed.
I wanted to capture the pivotal moment when my overwhelming feelings of “should have, could have, and would have” transform into a surge of healthy, productive motivations. It’s the tipping point where the weight of regret and sadness is absorbed into a resilient and healthy mind, ready to embrace change and strive for better.

Explosion, 2025
Paper, acrylic paint on canvas, sequins, gold ink, fabric in repurposed frame
23” x 26” x 4”
I am shattering the chains that once held me down. I am ready to blossom, to embrace growth. I yearn to become stronger and wiser.

30,000 Leagues In Search of My Sister

  • 30,000 Leagues In Search of My Sister

I directed, wrote, animated and performed the multiple voice over roles for this short. VisitBaltimore and I collaborated it to highlight the key features of Baltimore and promote its tourism. Because Baltimore City and Kawasaki City are sister cities, it was created for Kawasaki City’s centennial anniversary ceremony. Through July 2024 to March 2025, it has been displayed on various occasions and places.

This animation was shown along with Mayor Brandon Scott’s video message at the Kawasaki City’s Multi-Cultural Coexistence Forum concert to celebrate Kawasaki City’s centennial anniversary. The event was held in International Cultural Exchange Center in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa prefecture in Japan in July 2024 as a part of their international festival. It was free of charge for people to attend. A quartet from the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra performed in the concert on the occasion.

This animation was posted on Visit Baltimore’s YouTube channel. Kawasaki City published an article about it
