Richard came to Baltimore in 1961 to teach high school art. He received an MFA at MICA in 1969. In 1970 he became head of the sculpture department at Catonsville Community College, and was one of a group of artists considered outstanding in their field.
As a 7 year old, he worked in his father’s hardware store, and became fascinated with industrial materials. "I even started a crafts club for neighborhood kids. We made all kinds of stuff."
