About Red Swan
Red Swan is a women-owned, Baltimore-based mural studio run by Hanna Moran and Lindy Swan. Both artists trained as oil painters in college, initially imagining more traditional studio careers. In 2014, they met while painting educational murals in Baltimore-area schools and quickly fell in love with public art—its openness, accessibility, and ability to reach people in their everyday lives. That shared experience led them to start Red Swan, and for the past decade they have been designing… more
Glenmont Park Activity Building
This mural is painted on the Park Activity Building in Glenmont Local Park, in Glenmont, Maryland. The design was shaped by community feedback gathered during the project’s outreach phase, along with census data highlighting Glenmont’s cultural diversity—particularly its large Hispanic population, with many residents tracing roots to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.
The mural celebrates that diversity by bringing together plants and animals from both Maryland and these three Latin American countries, forming a shared, symbolic garden. We aimed for the piece to feel joyful and welcoming, while also reflecting the movement of people, cultures, and stories that shape the Glenmont community.
Featured in the mural are the Torogoz (El Salvador), the Resplendent Quetzal (Guatemala), and a monarch butterfly (Mexico and Maryland), shown in flight to suggest connection and continuity across borders. Dahlias from Mexico appear alongside native Black-eyed Susans and Purple Coneflowers, linking cultural heritage with the local landscape and creating a sense of both rootedness and home.
Set against a vibrant gradient of blues, greens, and yellows—colors requested through community feedback—the mural reflects Glenmont as a rich mosaic: a place made brighter by its many roots, shared stories, and growing connections.
Chesapeake College Cambridge Center
In 2021 we worked with PNC Bank, Cambridge Main Street, and Chesapeake College to design and paint this place-making mural in the heart of Cambridge Maryland’s growing downtown. The vibrant mural highlights the area’s unique landscape and ecological diversity, using our own photographs of the nearby Choptank river as reference. We consulted with local scientists in choosing which species to feature, including the microscopic organisms that keep the Bay healthy. The resulting mural features not only well known bird species, but subtle representations of local plankton, using photographs from the scientists’ own research, imbuing the mural with a deeper, more personal narrative.
Camden Yards, Birdland Mural Project
In 2019 we designed and painted this mural in Oriole Park at Camden Yards, as part of the Birdland Mural Series. Along with several other female artists, we partnered with the stadium to celebrate the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. For our contribution, we painted orioles in flight, against a celebratory backdrop of confetti-like shapes. This project was curated by Gaia and sponsored by PNC Bank.
455 Massachusetts Ave Rooftop
We designed this bright, colorful mural for a multipurpose rooftop in Northwest DC. The mural features larger than life lilac-breasted rollers and tropical foliage over a sunset-inspired gradient. This playful piece serves as a vibrant backdrop for the building’s events.
Belvedere Square Market
Last year we had the opportunity to collaborate with the Belvedere Square Merchant’s Association and the local neighborhood of Govans to bring this place-making mural to life. We included references to Belvedere Square’s history as a marketplace, to Govans’s past as an area rich in flower farms, and included some Baltimore-specific imagery, like the Baltimore Oriole and city skyline. The bright rays in the background convey the main message that the Merchants wanted to get across - that this is a time of renewal and a fresh start for the Square and neighborhood at large.
DC Walls International Mural Festival, 2020
In 2020, we painted one of our largest murals to date for the DC Walls International Mural Festival. This mural features kingfishers and lotus leaves, against a playful, abstract background. The mural soars over DC’s Alethia Tanner park, serving as a colorful backdrop for countless activities - from running festivals to outdoor concerts and movies.

Cielo Modern Residences
For this mural, we wanted to create an uplifting work of art that would reflect the energy and vibrancy of the NoMa community. Washington DC is a kaleidoscope of cultures; a city with its own rich local traditions that is made even brighter by diverse transplants and thriving immigrant communities. Inspired by this idea of a DC as a confluence of people and ideas, we chose to feature migratory birds that frequent the area— an Indigo Bunting and a Yellow Warbler. The two birds are rendered with realistic detail, but in contrasting jewel-tones, each bird’s plumage made more vibrant by the other’s presence. The bunting and warbler fly towards one another, paths converging as they move their wings in reflected symmetry.
The mural’s background consists of playful, abstract imagery set against a sunrise sky. Overlapping bands of multicolored gradients evoke a sense of union and togetherness, through the blending of distinct colors. Floating dots and scribbled lines lend levity to the composition; these lively elements create a buoyant energy that is fitting of NoMa’s exciting future.
Makers Rise
In 2023, we designed and painted this mural in Herndon, Virginia. We wanted to highlight native plants and animals, so we paired realistically rendered blue flag irises and overlapping silhouettes of cardinals and other local birds.
US Botanic Gardens, Summer Exhibition
In 2022, we worked with the United States Botanic Garden to paint a series of 20 murals for their summer terrace exhibition called Cultivate: Growing Food in Changing World. The exhibition showcased crops from around the world, and the murals corresponded to garden beds, which were organized by geographic region. We worked closely with architects, botanists, and master gardeners to choose which plants to feature, and how to best supplement the physical plantings. The murals served to add color and interest throughout the growing season, highlight the diversity within species, and show hard-to-see elements such as the interiors of crops.

DC Walls International Mural Festival, 2021
For the 2021 DC Walls International mural festival, we were invited to paint a mural along DC’s Metropolitan Branch Trail. This piece features a colorful tiger and oversized nasturtium flowers and leaves.
