  • my heart comes undone (2025)

This piece has been a part of my life since 2014, when Judah wrote it for me. We recorded it and made a video, both of which were originally released in 2014 and re-released on my album in 2021. Once I realized it had been 10 years since it all began, I started to feel it was important that I revisit the piece. I wanted to make something that reflected how much I’ve changed, and how much my love with and for Judah has grown over the last decade. Also, while I didn’t know it at the time, I think it is very fitting that I was pregnant with our first child. She is the living embodiment of our love for each other. I plan on continuing this project by re-recording this piece every 10 years, finding something new in it every time. My hope is that when people watch this and listen to the music, it takes them to a beautiful place that makes them feel safe and loved.

About Lavena

Born and raised in Seattle, WA, Lavena’s parents started her on cello at age 6, but she didn’t take to the instrument until her father gave her a CD of Jacqueline du Pré performing Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Inspired by du Pré’s incredible sound and fearless bravura, Lavena fell in love with the cello and knew that music was her calling.

After finishing her studies at the Peabody Conservatory, Lavena became a founding member of The Atlas String Quartet, which made the semifinals… more

not alone (2023)

I've always had an interest in the relationship between music and film, and specifically in making filmed classical music more visually interesting. It wasn't until the fall of 2021 that I finally had an idea that wouldn't let me go. I kept seeing in my head an image of a girl who was trapped, and as I let my imagination run wild I heard Bach in my head and the music acted as a conduit to take her to a new world. I realized that this was a concept I very much related to and I needed to find a way to create this world and share it with anyone who might find beauty and escape in it. This was my first time creating and directing a film, and I had a lot of help from a lot of incredibly talented colleagues, friends, and most importantly my sister (who plays the young girl that started this whole journey).

  • not alone (2023)

A film that uses music – J.S. Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello No. 5 in C Minor – and dance to tell the story of a young girl's escape to another world.

in your hands (2021)

Between 2014 and 2019, I regularly performed on the Evolution Contemporary Music Series and I was proud to represent Baltimore to the big name guest artists/composers that would come in from New York and other big cities. Through those five years I had built up a sizable repertoire list, and decided that instead of doing the standard rep as a debut (which was the advice I had been given), I wanted to play the music I now associated with Baltimore. I also wanted to make as much of the album as I possibly could in Baltimore, by recording at a Baltimore recording studio, by playing with other Baltimore-based musicians, and by working with a Baltimore-based sound engineer to record and mix each track. To me, it's a time capsule of those five years when I was out of school and working to establish myself as a performer, and also finding satisfaction in showing other artists how much Baltimore has to offer the world.

my heart comes undone (2014)

On February 14, 2014, my then-boyfriend (now-husband composer Judah Adashi) gave me this piece as my Valentine's Day present. We had only been dating for a few months at that point, and I didn't quite know what to think. Once I had a chance to play through it, I was stunned by its beauty - I knew I had to play it and make it my own. I recorded it later that year, and feel incredibly grateful that over a decade later, people still listen and find meaning in something so personal to me and my husband. It communicates how painful it can feel in your heart to long for someone from afar, with hope that when the time is right, you will get your chance to be with the one you love.
