I have been taking Polaroid portraits for nearly twenty years and have been documenting the people of Baltimore for 6+ years. During this time, I have taken 1,000s of photos as part of this ongoing project which has resulted in two solo shows in local galleries as well as representation by Polanoir Gallery in Vienna, Austria.
My photographs document, tell stories and present questions. These photos reveal details about my friends and the people I meet. They show people the way they are and call attention to the way we can be perceived by others.
As a photographer I also shoot digital and 35mm analog film, but I have remained passionate about Polaroid. The results not only create an original one of a kind artifact, but there is also an honesty about the resulting photographs that you can only get when positioned two feet from your subject.

Ode to Anthony Van AngolaOil, Metal Leaf on Canvas. Ode to Anthony Van Angola & Ode to Catalina Van Angola pay homage to some of the first marriages between people of color in colonial America. In these paintings, contemporary Black Americans are surrounded by symbols that harken back to that time period and the impact of slavery in America. These works are a visual representation of a history that affects the psychology and culture of people of today.

JENNIFERBaltimore, MD 2009 One of the reasons I love photographing people is that I can capture that unique individuality that each person has...and what better way than with a camera that produces only a single photo, a photo as unique as the person being photographed. Jennifer fits that description and more. I love running into her and hearing about her adventures.

JUDYSan Francisco, CA 2009 There's a long story behind this photo....I'll make it short. I had known Judy in the late 80s and at the time she would refer to me as "her photographer" because I had taken photos of her a couple of times. She was a little kooky and most of the clothes she wore were leopard print...even the frames on her glasses. On a recent trip to SF, she walked by me on the street and we stopped and had a couple of sodas and caught up the best we could. That's the short version of the story.
