About Nick

I was born in 1978 in Baltimore City, where I continue to live with my wife and children. For several years now I have been teaching drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpture to youngsters at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. I received my education at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and Towson University.

Eagles, Hares, and Bears: American Wunderkammer
This was an art exhibition based around the concept of a Wonder Cabinet, otherwise known as a Cabinet of Curiosities . The art works on display were reminiscent of natural and cultural artifacts, and their configuration was dense and organic. The materials employed were most often wood, plaster, and ink and presented in a variety of wall-oriented formats. The art works could be described as sculptural, rustic, earthy, and anachronistic. Major themes explored were: the origins of culture, culture-clash, basic human relationships to nature, and creative v. destructive forces evident in human history, especially as they were presented in the theater of early North America.

Egg Shelf Compendium
These half-egg pieces are freely movable and present many options for arrangement. Made of plaster, they provide an opportunity to lay down ink in an interesting manner while also allowing for scratching and even carving. The curved surfaces work well for depicting heads especially, reinforcing the basic head form instantly. I view the shelf as a sketchbook, with the eggs as arrangeable pages. Mostly they are executed quickly in single sessions and are meant to get new ideas rolling, to work out components of larger plans, or to provide elements that are suited for group presentation. The angled shelf is intended to be an organizational platform for contents that require close investigation. What is satisfying about the shelf is that there are no limitations to what is presented there- in this sense it is truly a sketchbook. It can be fragmentary in certain areas and refined in others. There may be elements of clear identifiable imagery and there may be elements of a more essential character. I look forward to elaborating upon the shelf in terms of its format, how it relates to the surrounding space, and the range of items it may contain.
