.This is one of my favorite sculptures that I have made. It is a Baltimore sculpture.This is not a sculpture from Switzerland.It is Gritty and True. It belongs in Baltimore.

1) GLORY: The Crusaders regain Jerusalem only for a short time. "G" is for Glory.

2) SAINT BARBARA: Saint Barbara is made from white poplar wood that I carved. She was noted for her Virginity. She was beautiful and she refused to marry the Pagan Prince her father had selected. She refused to renounce Christ and she was imprisoned in a Tower.Finally they cut her head off. Her symbol is a Tower. There is a really good one at the Walter's Art Museum, it is high in a niche near the ceiling.

1) Beauty and Death: If I show Beauty and Death in a Gallery in New York City I will call the police on myself. You can't have a handgun in NY City, that is the Rockefeller Law. The publicity would be good for sales.

2)Lil' Wayne: Lil' Wayne is a rapper. He is a Big Shit Nigga..at least that is what it said in the song. I think some of the Hip Hop artists are evoking Old Minstrel Show characters.I hope they know that. Lil' Wayne is very rich and he has a great musical ear.

1) FLY FLY is about the development of lightweight structural materials for the Aircraft Industry.In the 1960's Havre de Grace, Maryland had both of the world's largest manufacturers of Honeycomb Core; Hexcel and Bloomingdale Rubber Co./ American Cyanamid. Havre de Grace manufactured bomber parts in WW2 and sent them down to the Glen L. Martin Co. to win the war. The artist Frank Stella created many fine "paintings" on Honeycomb core. My Dad served in the Mediterranean Army Air Corps (the precursor to the US Air Force),at the Livorno Airbase in Italy.

2) Moshiach (messiah) I had carved an Egyptian Head in black Basalt in the 1980's. It became the "head" for an Egyptian themed sculpture. The messiah concept may have originated in Egypt, brought by the Jews,to save the Christians. Thutmose was a pharoah , Moses brings the messiah out of Egypt and the Christ rides into Jerusalem on a donkey.We are saved not by works alone.

3)The Emoji Tree The Emoticons on your computer come from the Emoji Tree. They start as little buds, then they pop open. They enter your computer through the internet.

4) PACIFIC The flotsam from the Ocean is woven into a decorative garland of the Pacific cultures. I have learned to play the didgeridoo.

1) Bless U: Your mother smacks you with the wooden cooking spoon ,the angel protects you, you run out of the kitchen and up the steps to your room. You are safe. Bless U. You are Blessed.

2)Columbian Exchange: Columbus brings smallpox,slavery and guns. The New World Sends back Potatos, Tomatos and Gold.

3) Happiness: Happiness is a cake topper. Mrs. Peanuts is Hot. Mr. Peanuts is Happy.

This project brings the words of Matthew 25:2 "Five of the virgins were foolish..." together with the sins of Babylon. How is the word to be made flesh?

Athena evokes the goddess,her symbolic form,her temple,her olive branch,the sacred location above the city. She occupies the temple in our imagination. Her image can not be seen by mortals.The artist creates images to represent the deity, to enlighten the worshiper and allow them to enter the spirit realm.

A sculptural reaction to intense globalization and the multi-culturalism of the 21st Century. A new context brings forth a new mode of thinking,new reactions and new associations. The "final word" of the sculpture emerges as I work in process.The "type-face" I create becomes both symbol of an idea and an abstract three dimensional form. A finished sculpture should evoke a spiritual power object or a religious totem or icon. I am using a very human scale to reference spiritual objects At a technical level one must solve problems of combining, joining and modifying disparate materials, adding and removing,making choices about polychrome finishes, shapes and arrangements, until a unified entity appears,greater than the sum of it's parts.A successful sculpture should "just" look like it was always "that way".
The content relates to the form and the form merges with the content. The "title" is both sculpture and symbol.How does the "mojo" get in the idol? One must say the magic words.
