Neal's profile

My work originates in the space between art history and the hand-made sculptural object. I grew up in 20th century America, where the factory-made consumer object was the most powerful sculptural form. These consumer "products" were raised to the level of sacred icons with the automobile being the most powerful of all.
I came to welded steel sculpture first through "hotrods" and then through fabricating piping for the petroleum industry. I have chosen to use these same industrial processes to combine the detritus of mass production, global trade and consumer advertising to create individual hand-made sculptural objects.
My primary concern in Art has become the question of how the sacred power enters a devotional object. In other words, how does the ‘mojo’ get into an idol?
