The Colorollstories Candombe mural was created in 2024 as part of the Jasper Beautification Project, where Colorollstories collaborated with the community to bring this cultural celebration to life.

This mural is a vibrant representation of Afro-Uruguayan culture, inspired by the traditional music and dance of Candombe. It captures the rhythm, energy, and communal spirit of this tradition, which originated from enslaved African people in Uruguay and has become a vital part of the country’s cultural heritage.

The project included a special community painting day, where participants came together to add color to the mural while celebrating the tradition of Candombe through art and music. This collaborative effort showcased the power of art to connect people, foster cultural appreciation, and bring vibrancy to the community.

The mural’s black-and-white design, a hallmark of Colorollstories, allowed the community to be part of the creative process, transforming it into a living work of art that embodies unity and celebration.

    How Colorollstories Candombe Connects People

This project is designed to foster connections on multiple levels:

    1. Cultural Awareness: By celebrating Candombe, the story educates participants about its rich history and cultural significance, creating a bridge between Afro-Uruguayan traditions and diverse audiences.

    2. Collaborative Creativity: The mural invites individuals of all ages and backgrounds to participate in coloring, promoting teamwork and a shared sense of accomplishment.

    3. Community Celebration: Events like community painting days incorporate live music and storytelling, creating an immersive experience that builds relationships and memories.

    How the 1Book1Mural Project Works

The 1Book1Mural initiative connects the sale of handmade Colorollstories coloring books to the creation of murals. For each book sold, one square foot of a mural is funded, creating a sustainable way to bring art into communities.

    • The Coloring Book: Each book features stories and designs inspired by the mural and serves as a portable piece of the project, allowing supporters to engage creatively at home.

    • The Mural: Once funded, murals like Candombe are painted in black and white, becoming a shared canvas for the community.

    • Community Engagement: The mural’s completion involves a collaborative painting event where participants add color, transforming the artwork while fostering a sense of ownership and connection.

The Colorollstories Candombe mural exemplifies the project’s mission: using art to celebrate culture, inspire creativity, and unite communities while sustaining public art through the simple act of purchasing a coloring book.
