We Only Have Weekends

16mm to digital, b/w, silent, 09:05

The film chronicles a holiday getaway to Montauk, New York. The traveller surveys enclosing seashores and forested inlands as a fixation upon particular sites slowly develops. Defunct military stations, tangled trees in forests, stairways of private homes, shifting facades of hoodoos, distinguished condominiums, and shallow waters at sunset are revisited throughout the duration of this daytrip. The traveller cautiously sways and comfortably sits among these landscapes, void of local residents or travel companions. It is uncertain if these passages are representative of a newfound expedition or reminiscent of past encounters. The contrast between distancing and dwelling acts only to confuse consequence of this voyage.

The Enchanted Forest

16mm to digital, color, sound, 06:29

Made in memory of the theme park that still remains in Baltimore County, these strange tableaus weave together the beauty of both the abandoned and transplanted landscape. Subtle superimpositions of the vibrant attractions amidst the forgotten forest present the possibility of a nostalgic return to a former glory.

Mountain Lying Down

16mm to digital, b/w & color, sound, 03:00

The title signifies the Native American name for the Grand Canyon, a massive gorge in the state of Arizona and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Turbulence and tranquility gain exposure at enthralling elevations. Strata are uplifted through edges of contrast caused by severe slants of the sun. The scope of the sacred site reaches translation in static brevity, unearthing billions of years of sedimentary rock sequences.

Marshy Place Across

16mm to digital, b/w & color, sound, 04:36

The title signifies the Native American name for Assateague Island, a national seashore and natural landmark located off the coast of Maryland. A passive bay and pristine beach compose the barriers of this subtle yet stunning passage. Distractions amongst the dunes awaken development of the ecological and departure of the artificial. The film culminates in close proximity to a small band of feral horses that share a common territory and domesticated ancestry.

Falling Out Part One

16mm to digital, b/w, silent, 12:21

Falling Out captures on discontinued b/w and color film the ambiguous determination and seamless distancing of a father and son over the course of several seasons. Part One sways between scenes of shared experiences and temporal passages revealing the fragility and fortitude of the relationship. It is presented as a diptych to further reflect the presence of a father and son, the mindsets affected by the conflicts endured. The confluence of conflict and camaraderie calls into question the demonstration of a familial revival. The bond amongst the father and son strays just as intensely as it returns home.

Sunrise Fires

16mm to digital, b/w and color, sound, 06:25

In early September 1995 the Sunrise Wildfire was extinguished. 7,000 acres had burned during the peak of the tourist season yet nobody was killed. The aggravated assault swept from one side of Sunrise Highway to the other without the slightest hesitance. Another series of severe brush fires ignited 17 years later and became known as the Brookhaven Blaze. The outbreak left around 2,000 acres torched. The wild ruin and regrowth were revisited within The Central Pine Barrens, the largest natural area on Long Island and its last remaining wilderness.

Coupled Vision

Another facet of my moving image practice is found in collaboration with my partner Mary Ancel. Coupled Vision presents our shared realizations through lyrical recordings of particular surroundings, which reflect on photosensitive materials regions during somewhat similar and drastically different timeframes. Together and apart, we seek to resolve the anxieties of an unstable age while constantly searching for the sublime in the real world. Within such retreat we investigate a sincere fascination with the human relationship to the empirical landscape. Our process is embedded in its medium, which allows us to capture specific memories; at the same time it is a way of presenting the phenomenal, which is all encompassing and certainly beyond our comprehension.

Our collaborative process has previously distinguished time-based mappings of the tourist trap of Montauk, the otherworldly state in New Mexico, the adjacent areas of Assateague Island and Ocean City as well as the familial nostalgia in Coming Home (Ancel) and Falling Out (Gattorna).

Coupled Vision was recently shown at the 2013 Sondheim Artscape Prize Semi-Finalists Exhibition and selected for the mIrrorspeak group show at EMP Collective, the Golden Mountain Exhibition at TULCA Visual Arts Festival and as a Semi-Finalist for the 2014 Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards.

Jones Falls

16mm to digital, b/w, sound, 10:11

Jones Falls flows into Baltimore and becomes a small river as the expressway and railway run parallel within city limits. Its long history as a transportation corridor spans contamination from runoffs to environmental recovery movements. However, in a sea of human habitation, stormwater and sewage systems are in continual degradation. These affected areas still remain with much natural splendor despite manmade strife. After a precarious course, Jones Falls empties into the seemingly immaculate Inner Harbor as its main tributary. There is with strong reason to stay hopeful about the future health of Jones Falls. It is an astonishing conduit no matter concern for mesmeric or manufactured appeal.
