Embroidery is a three dimensional act! Using color thread to make a flat surface look three dimensional meqnt getting out my color wheel and color theory books! Painting with thread has been the most challenging technical work that I have been doing. Layering the right colors to render and gives my birds life. As bird species become more and more endangerd due to climate change and man's intervention, I find that I can't stich fast enough to document each bird. Starting with my hand embroidered birds for my piece "Hanging them out to Dry", educated me on threading more than one color in the needle to mix or blend colors. These birds are the ones I created using my long arm quilting machine to speed up the process a bit more, but adding to the stress of a fast moving needle and messing up means ripping out.

Green Kingfisher , 2021This Green kingfisher is one of the newest and the first full-color bird portraits of my bird portrait series. This one is more than a portrait that emphasizes his full and brave body! !This drawing is based on a photograph from a bird app. on my iPad. This bird is created completely with thread, layering colors to create the form of the bird. This bird portrait has been created by freehand stitching on a sewing machine! Otherwise, I draw with my sewing machine. There is absolutely No programing involved. I draw each portrait first as an ink drawing and use that to trace guidelines of the image on the canvas using a fabric marker that fades or washes away. Even though I may use the same drawing per bird, each becomes a one of kind due to the process that I use. Stitched on heavy duty cotton duck canvas fabric and is stretched in a 14”.
