The Out of Your Head Collective is a Baltimore-based improvised music collective co-founded by bassist Adam Hopkins and guitarist Matt Frazao in early 2009. Hopkins and Frazao curate weekly performances by the collective on Tuesday nights at The Windup Space. Out of Your Head is an attempt to broaden the local improvised music scene in Baltimore by forming groups of musicians in performance that have never previously played together. Out of Your Head was chosen (critic's pick) as Baltimore's "Best Band" in the 2010 issue of City Paper's Best of Baltimore, which read "After well more than a year of existence, OOYH has turned into one of Baltimoreâ??s most consistent ground-zeroes for musical revolutionâ??and thatâ??s in a city of musical revolution."

There are approximately 50 musicians currently involved in the collective, and the number grows with each scheduling cycle. Every Tuesday night Hopkins and Frazao draw from this pool of musicians and create ensembles that perform two sets of improvised music. Performances are scheduled in two month cycles, during which each member of the collective is likely to perform once, sometimes twice. Each week a completely different group is brought to The Windup Space to perform, and the band is likely to never be repeated. Some collective members are already in bands together, and some have never met, but the results of the new pairings are always exciting and fresh. The pool of musicians associated with Out of Your Head continues to grow and we are slowly but steadily building a new audience for improvised music in Baltimore. We've had guest performers come from Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston, and local musicians such as Michael Formanek, Dave Ballou, Susan Alcorn, John Dierker, and Will Redman participate.

On Tuesday March 1, 2011 we will celebrate the two-year anniversary of Out of Your Head with special guest and world-renowned improviser Andrew D'Angelo (http://andrewdangelo.com/) from NY. This will be the second event in our Guest Artist Series, the first being our one-year anniversary on March 2, 2010 for which we brought Baltimore-native saxophonist Ellery Eskelin (http://home.earthlink.net/~eskelin/) to perform with the collective. We are currently raising money via Kickstarter to fund more performances like these, where we bring artists of international stature in the improvised music community to come to Baltimore and perform on OOYH. More info is available at http://kickstarter.com/profile/outofyourhead.

Performances occur every Tuesday night at The Windup Space from 9:30p-midnight. Out of Your Head is always free of charge. The Windup Space is located at 12 W North Avenue, Baltimore MD, 21201.

Eric Trudel-tenor sax; Kevin Gift-keyboards; Jon Rogerson-guitar; Mike Ross-drums. This excerpt is taken from a longer improvisation from an OOYH performance. I was really amazed watching this performed live, as it really sounded like a composed piece of music. In reality, as is the case with all meetings of OOYH, the band had just played together for the first time and created this piece on the spot. It is a great example to break the stereotype that all improvised music is weird or inaccessible.
  • OOYH Orchestra (excerpt)
The Out of Your Head Orchestra is an opportunity for as many collective members as are available to perform together as a large ensemble. It's a tradition for the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to always be an orchestra night, and we've had anywhere from 12-20 collective members show up and perform. It always makes for some really powerful full-ensemble moments, but the group also breaks down into smaller ensembles to explore a wide variety of textures and sound.

It is another clip that shows the more accessible side of improvised music. It begins with a lot of extended string sounds, but falls into a very tonal area and stays there for a couple minutes before concluding.
