A novel in progress.
Haitian Chef Marcelle Altidor believes she was born unlucky, a perpetual victim of unfortunate things. She was supposed to be born into a life of opulence with two loving parents, instead, her mother dies birthing her, and her father abandons her and flees the country.
She's bounced around from relative to relative, making her feel like a burden, when all she wants is to feel accepted, a secure sense of belonging. At her uncle’s house, she meets the house-help, Naomie, who becomes Marcelle’s only childhood friend. They build a special bond, a sisterly connection, and finally, Marcelle feels lucky.
Until one day, she betrays Naomie, out of fear of being rejected by her family, which changes the direction of both of their lives. As a result, Naomie is sent away and Marcelle is sent to New York to her father and his new family.
After twenty years of no contact, Marcelle receives a call from Naomie, who wants to reconcile. Marcelle is hesitant to visit but she doesn't want to lose Naomie again. She visits Haiti for the first time and wants this trip to be many things: nostalgic, forgiving, redemptive, but what she doesn't expect is a massive earthquake that changes the direction of their lives once again.
