ghosts over the city

strange hand, pencil on paper, 2019
strange hand, pencil on paper, 2019 For the Superhero show I created a triptych of hand studies inspired by classic comic book artists like Jack Kirby. Early comic artists took inspiration from Mannerist and Renaissance artist. You can see similarities in poses and foreshortening. Unlike Pop Art where the artist amplifies the means of production, painting Benday dots and blowing up actual comics, these drawings use comics as fine art subject. I tried using my own hand as a model, but that didn’t work. The model had to be the comic. They complete a circle: fine art → comics → fine art.

unstretched

My unstretched series preserves an unfinished quality in the works, an open-ended-ness physically and narratively. The canvas was primed with rabbit skin glue to retain the natural color of the canvas. The paint has been built up — canvas, under painting, and drawing exposed. I want the viewer to get a sense of where these objects come from, that a person stood in front of them with a brush, reacting to each new mark. There was no preconception, no formula. Self awareness can be an obstacle. Self-consciousness is not easy to avoid for a trained artist. Yet it can be something to push against. These works strive for immediacy. Dressed down, undressed, and unstretched.

Apparitions and premonitions is a series of paintings and drawing that span 911. The paintings expressed a feeling of foreboding by depicted a ghosts hovering above a city. With the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in March of 2001 the work began to contemplate world events. The series ended with a small group of paintings that tried to digest the events of 911.
