About Cristina
Cristina Gonçalves is artist living and working in the Baltimore area. Her work takes the form of expressive two-dimensional drawings, prints and paintings that explore the dual nature of self and the baser human instincts that lie beneath the skin of intellect and societal decorum.

I began with a lithograph image of a bald head, then followed the exploration into woodcut.

Intaglio Face Exploration
These recent prints continue my explorations. For this series I made 3 different plates with images of heads (2 copper intaglio plates and 1 collagraph). I used and reused them in different combinations, layering plates and collaging cut or torn prints.

Apects
Large expressive woodcuts that delve into the frightening and animal nature of self. These are instinctual reactions to the wood and to the act of cutting it, through which the most deeply buried is allowed to surface.
