  • K-Space
    K-Space

    Acrylic on board, 19" x 33", 2024

MRI technology utilizes a mathematical plane in between the physical subject of observation and the representation of that subject on a display screen. Similar to how a glass lens specifically refracts the light of a subject to be picked up by a digital array or film, K-space transforms, or prepares, the signal being received from the subject in an MRI machine in order to present that signal as pixels of different brightness values on a digital display screen.

  • Impedance
    Impedance

    Acrylic and crayon on cardboard, 22" x 38", 2025

Medical imaging modalities utilize the properties of different bodily tissues in order to create contrast in an image to be reviewed. Impedance is a measure of how much signal a tissue blocks from a medical instrument's receptor and creates contrast in x-ray and ultrasound technologies.

  • Polarization
    Polarization

Oil and marker on foam board, 5" x 7", 2024

Polarization is separating into starkly different categories, and in light it is restricting transverse waves to a singular direction. Polar opposites are descriptions for use in studies of society as well as in chemistry and physics.

  • Saltbox
    Saltbox

Oil, acrylic, and marker on canvas, 10" x 8", 2024

The hexagon is a naturally occurring shape in nature due to it's strength and structural organization in numbers. A ubiquitous sight in Baltimore city during the winter months, the salt box can represent the organization of and the resources allocated from the city government, which may or may not provide it's city residents proper autonomy.

About Joshua

With a professional background in Biology and Bioengineering Joshua Rogers specializes in illustration and painting to create work exploring concepts of resonance and energy amongst other fundamentals of the physical sciences. He prioritizes texture and pattern in his pieces, though he uses symbols also, if not forwardly presenting, to imbue the work through use of underlayers or as physical tools in order to create the piece.

Curly-Q

The underlying energy of our universe cannot be seen with our eyes unless aided by instruments. As an artistic engineer, I aim to solve this problem with the tools of artistic expression at my disposal. The curly-Q, one of the simplest doodles, represents to me the simplicity of what this energy dilutes to when entering our human understanding.
