Sculpture; Steel , steel and clay, cast bronze

The biomorphic imagery is used as metaphor to explore the human condition. There are works in welded steel, a combination of welded steel and clay , and cast bronze. I worked exclusively in this manner for many years.

Monoprints, monotypes

I have been working at Pyramid Atlantic once a week for over a year. I have been making montypes where I paint on a plate and mask elements - adding up to 10 layers of ink in response to the previous layer. The monoprints are defined as having an element that repeats in subsequent prints though not necessarily in the same orientation. NOT one of these is planned in any way. I am simply responding to the previous layer, printing until it is "done" .

Interactive Projects

I have been an object maker for as long as I can remember. Over the past 5 years or so I feel that a lifetime spent teaching art has emphasized for me the interactive and empowering aspect to art making. These works bring together interaction in order to create empowerment.
  • Empower Station, NYC
    Empower Station, NYC
An interactive work that took place at Figment NYC on Governors Island. People would come by and I would engage them in conversation about the small acts that they perform that help other people. In this way I hoped to help people realize how they do empower others and thus themselves. I was able to witness moments such as parents telling their 13 yr old son that they considered him a third parent when it came to caring for his little brother.
  • Totem to Creativity, 2010
    Totem to Creativity, 2010
Built and displayed for the Mattin Arts Center at Johns Hopkins University. Passersby would engage in arts activities and hang their work on the sculpture. People could also attach objects. This is based on the African minkisi figures where the more objects that were attached, the more power the figure gained. This was the beginning of my thinking about actively empowering through engaging the passerby or viewer.

This was the first direct Empower project; people could call my cell phone number and have a conversation with me about how they empowered others and thus themselves as well. One man talked about how he took care of his chronically ill wife and was surprised to find out that this was very significant.
