Art Sound Now, the acclaimed series that pairs sound artists with art from the Walters Art Museum. Reid was drawn to these four reliefs in the Ancient Near East gallery of the Walters. Her work for this performance explores themes of destruction and destabilization of foreign countries caused by the United States through electronic music and projections by Jose Rosero. Sonically, she samples a poem by Waqia Abdul-Kareem written for the piece and the sound of glass using contact microphones and effects paired with synthesized rhythms and melodies. Harsh sounds and imagery combined with moments of ambience spark a conversation between our role in destruction abroad and a peaceful, revered museum setting.

  • ART/ SOUND/ NOW - Immortal Voices

Artists Amy Reid and Pangelica take you on a time-traveling experience to give a literal voice to two women represented in the Walters collection. Amy conjures the spirit of the goddess Amphitrite depicted in a gold-accented sculpture designed by Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié. Pangelica invokes the women entombed in the mummy depicted in the Mummy and Painted Cartonnage of an Unknown Woman composed of layers of linen and plaster. Their spectral Art Sound Now performance, Immortal Voices focuses on themes of healing and destruction through ambient sound and performance. Art Sound Now highlights our commitment to supporting local artists and exploring new perspectives on the collection.

  • Immortal Voices

2 minute clip of Amy Reid's composition for GRL PWR's collaborative audio visual piece Immortal Voices commissioned for the Walters Art Museum. The project was crafted for the Walters Art Museum’s Art Sound Now series, which asks musicians to use works in the collection as inspiration. Reid chose a gold-accented ivory statuette of Amphitrite, Greek goddess of the sea and wife of Poseidon. Pangelica picked “Mummy and Painted Cartonnage of an Unknown Woman,” remains from Ancient Egypt that were excavated around 1930 and acquired by the Walters in 1941. The sound art was streamed online, accompanied by videos the artists created. Both Pangelica and Reid were attracted to the marginalization of their subjects. Amphitrite was tasked with calming her husband’s rages, and her story exists in his shadow. “It made me think of women’s role as nurturers and mothers,” Reid says. “Sometimes we do it as a labor of love… and then sometimes it’s placed on us.”
