Scenes of the destructive force of nature and the impact upon the built environment are depicted. Many of these events are forever etched in our memory, such as Hurricane Katrina, the Indonesian tsunami and Hurricane Sandy.
The topic of the natural versus the un-natural/built environment is one of the main themes of my work.

Water in the Water Line27 x 21 framed, collage 2013 A tribute to Hurricane Sandy, (October, 2012) most of all when the storm surge entered the subway. The image of the water is semi-transparent, printed on vellum and placed on top of the collaged subway tunnels.

Steampunk Earthquake in Baltimore2011 20.25”w, 29”h framed collage, hand-colouring The history of Baltimore is the history of the railroad in America, as it is the farthest inland port on the east coast. The recent earthquake is shown by broken columns, which are the Shot Tower. A concentric circular map is the foundation; this 1948 map illustrates how far each circular district is from the central post office.

9.11.01Oct, 2001 24.5”w, 32”h collage, hand-colouring The World Trade Towers are made up of stock market quotes and columns of names from the first listing of victims in the newspaper. Victims' names scatter in the breeze and collect at the bottom of the towers. The moment of impact is depicted along with scenes that were recorded later, such as the disfigured rebar and the skyline without the World Trade Towers.

The Sky is Falling1990 collage, hand-colouring 26”w, 32”h The earth is crumbling while pieces of the sky are falling. California earthquakes are the inspiration; I realized while the earth is crumbling a similar destructive force threatens us; holes in the ozone layer.

sarcophagi Sumatra2005 16”w, 20”h collage Ocean imagery and fragments of a seismograph report from the Indonesian tsunami are combined in this collage piece. Sarcaphagi are made of collaged tye dye paper that reference traditional Indonesian textile designs. Images of human bones are included.

What Time Was It? How High Did It Get?2006 22 x 19, framed, collage, hand-colouring Measurements of the impact of hurricane Katrina are depicted. Images of clocks and measurements of rainfall, atmospheric pressure, wind currents and tides are combined with an organic depiction of stormy water and satellite images of the coastline, depicting the storm’s impact.?

el derecho2012 25”w, 21”h framed collage “el derecho” is the name for a weather pattern that reached the East Coast/mid-Atlantic region for the first time in July, 2012. This weather phenomenon was not known to residents of this part of the US and we didn't know what to call it. The name “el derecho” also means “justice” in Spanish, which was a fitting name and is illustrated by the familiar image of the scales of justice.
