Northern White Clouds / You Live in a World of Your Own - performed by Alex Lacquement
My bass playing challenges the assumption that the bass serves only as a grounding background voice in an ensemble. Just because the bass is low doesn't mean it can't be melodic and light. My music education spanned orchestral and jazz genres, but my true love is bluegrass music. Bluegrass is rooted in community gatherings and aurally shared tunes (both cornerstones of my professional musical ethos). This solo bass arrangement of two Bill Monroe numbers encapsulates my contemporary take on traditional mandolin melodies. Performed in one take in the 2640 Space near my home in Baltimore.

Snakerwinder - Alex Lacquement
This live performance of Snakewinder features a call-and-response interpretation between guitar and bass on what is usually presented as a solo-fiddle melody. It's a track from my debut album, The Big Album. Snakewinder is originally an uptempo fiddle tune recorded by Buddy Thomas. I fell in love with this tune and really enjoy trading melodic phrases with Luke Chohany on guitar and interacting with Justin Kruger on drums. Filmed by @rfbv_films

Red Run Valley - Alex Lacquement
This original composition will be released later this year on my second album. I often draw inspiration from the natural world and write music with place and people in mind. To me, music is a means of connecting with friends and collaborators. The core of this melody arrived to me at the end of the hike after spending a Fall day hiking on the Red Run Valley Trail in the Soldier's Delight area in Owings Mills, MD. It features Bryan McDowell on guitar, Patrick McAvinue on fiddle, and myself on upright bass.

Turkey Strut - Alex Lacquement
This is the first track from my debut album. It is an original composition of mine and features Luke Chohany on guitar, Dan Samules on drum set, and myself on upright bass. Turkey Strut is a reinterpretation of another original composition of mine that I wrote for my band, Charm City Junction. Just like my playing, my writing spans genres from Old Time and Bluegrass music to a funkier amalgamation of my musical interests. Is this fiddle music? Is this jazz music? It's hard to say, but clearly, it's Alex Lacquement's music.

The Big Album - debut original album
"The Big Album" represents the multitudes of musical statements I like to make through my vessels of the upright bass and voice. The album is a collection of both original works and a handful of some of my favorite songs and tunes re-imagined with the upright bass in mind as a strong lyrical voice in a variety of ensembles. This album is the first album I released under my own name seperate from all of the other works I have released with other bands that I am also a member of. My nickname growing up was "Big Al". That name faded over time, but eventually made a resurgence in my life. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to title my debut release "The Big Album" because it also represented a big step for me stepping out and making a more permanent musical statement. Listen to the album here.
Album Number Two - original compositions and musings
Performing bass and organizing community events dominate my schedule, but I write music all the time and want to share it with others. I selected the compositions on my upcoming album because they communicate nicely with each other track to track. The pieces on this album are light and dark and joyful and melancholy, reminding that it is okay to experience heaviness and weightlessness at the same time. This is a trio album meant to share equal focus between the predominant instrumentation of upright bass, guitar and fiddle sharing melodic weight.
