Coastline of Elba

My series of coastline paintings are done in gouache and India ink, from a birdeseye perspective, are map like and document the current state of worldwide coastal areas. I choose particularly fragile areas (like islands and river deltas) because these will be the first to change with Global Warming. Using a world atlas as a reference I free hand the areas and take liberties with color and texture. In many, the land seems almost biomorphic and alive with blood vessels and sinew. The series totals 38 large size (30" x 22")gouache paintings and 26 half sized. I like the strong figure ground relationship between the land and water and continue to find areas that fascinate the eye.Gouache and India Ink on black Arches paper, 30' x 22", coastline of The Island of Elba off the coast of Italy
