About Scott

With my "2 by 2" watercolor series of couple’s portraits my intent is to project the power of the individuals and the strength of the pair. The subject matter is the human self: how we see each other and how we want to be seen. Each painting began by observing pairs of people usually in public places. I look for something rather unique and distinguishing about them.  Invariably my paintings highlight the inner strength and integrity of my subjects.

2024 Hand-colored linocuts

Last year I completed seven more hand-colored linocuts to go with the 8 that were done in 2023. Together they formed to basis for the book "Circularity," in which the linocuts are paired with haiku by Boston poet Karen Klein.

These linocuts were initiated to augment "Planets," a series of tondo watercolors. Each Planet painting has a sky observed while traveling surrounded by a border that reflects a decorative arts pattern indicative of the area traveled. The linocuts are also mostly circular, but all of the elements are derived from historic decorative arts elements, for instance a Roman mosaic, a Sephardic Haggadah and an ancient Greek painted pitcher.

In 2024 the sources for the new linocuts included a soumak flatware carpet, Puritan-era tombstones and early 19th-century cut glass made in Pittsburgh.

TARGETS

The use of guns is so epidemic in this county that this series is dedicated to the victims of gunfire. But it also raises questions as to who are the shooters and who are the victims and what are the relationships between the two.  After I finished the painting, I went to an indoor shooting range and had each painting shot up.

These paintings from the winter of 2017 were the culmination of my "Up In Arms" series of watercolors that bergan in 2013. They can be viewed on my website at: http://www.scottponemone.com/portfolio/up-in-arms-2/
