Victoria's profile

My interest in the area of Art began at a very early age. Throughout my school years I would participate in Art shows, assist teachers in preparation of Exhibits and was given recognition for pieces of Art that were featured in Art Exhibitions.  From grades 10 through 12 my Art work was selected and featured in the Security Square Mall of Baltimore City, Maryland Art presentation.  I received placement in the top five Art showings all three years in high school and would receive monetary awards at the Martin’s West Art Awards Ceremony.  My academic achievement excelled and grew so that while attending Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland majoring in a nursing program and minoring in Art, a piece of my Art was featured in “The Out of Order” exhibition in the Maryland Art Place gallery in Baltimore City.  Although I had an interest in nursing, my heart remained true to my passion for Art.

While attending Coppin State University, my passion in Art grew past my academic achievements when I went to my first “Artist Talk” event and met Ms. Amy Sherald.  Ms. Sherald was inspiring and willingly afforded me an opportunity to intern and work under her during my summer breaks for 2 years.  It was during this internship that I was inspired to pursue a career as a museum professional. With mixed emotions about my college major at Coppin State, I struggled with my grades. After taking a year off from college and reflecting on my future, I researched a career in Art and decided to enroll in the Community College of Baltimore County (“CCBC”) with a focus in museum studies.

My employment with the American Visionary Art Museum (“AVAM”) has inspired me to pursue a career in the museum profession.  I was always curious about how a museum or gallery function on a day-to-day basis and from what I have observed I am most intrigued by the curatorial department. Since I have now dedicated my education toward museum studies, I feel that an internship will help me gain a firsthand experience on how the curatorial department works in a museum or a gallery. Working at AVAM has provided me with the start to my professional development.   Being employed at AVAM for the last 2 years has given me direct insight on what it means to manage, oversee, preserve and totally be responsible for artwork, collectibles, historic items and be the caretaker of all of these items.  The Founder and Director of AVAM has been an inspiration and continue to encourage me to move forward in my career and the desire to become a registrar.
