Sylvie's profile
Sylvie van Helden began her art career copying book covers in the basement of her parents home in Indiana at the age of 7. Her mom thought her drawings were decent and enrolled her in some art classes through the community art association. Fast forward to high school and college, where she buried her head in books and forgot art for many years. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Biology, she spent a year in a research lab and took night classes in art. Soonafter, she switched course to pursue a second degree in Fine Arts, and then came to MICA for her graduate degree.
Today, she balances teaching, running, and working in her studio with time with her 3 boys --2 furry and one human. During the last 5 years she has exhibited her works at venues such as Loyola University, Hillyer Art Space, The Autry Museum, and the Painting Center. Her honors include a residency from the Teachers Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2010), a residency award from the Vermont Studio Center (2015), and two Individual Artist Grants from Maryland State Arts Council (2004, 2016).
