Sookkyung's profile

Sookkyung Park (b. South Korea; based in Maryland, USA) is a sculptor working primarily with paper to explore material transformation, labor, and cultural identity. After operating a successful Arts & Crafts studio in South Korea for over 25 years, she relocated to the United States and earned a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Maryland (2016) and an MFA from Towson University (2023).

Park has presented solo exhibitions at the Asian Arts Center at Towson University, IA&A at Hillyer (Washington, D.C.), Montpelier Arts Center, and VisArts Center. Across numerous solo and group exhibitions—including invited and selected project-based presentations at the MacLean Project for the Arts (VA), Goucher College, Maryland Art Place, Brentwood Arts Exchange, and the Korean Cultural Center (Washington, D.C.)—she has developed an expanded language of paper-based sculpture, investigating the material’s structural strength, tactile sensitivity, and transformative potential. Her sculpture Blooming was selected for Art on Paper at the 2024 New York Art Fair.

Her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The Korea Times, East City Art, and Bmore Art. She has received multiple recognitions, including two consecutive Best in 3-D Category awards from Contemporary Art Gallery Online (2021, 2022), First Prize in Fiber Art Now’s international Paper Made competition (2023), the 2023 ARTsites Grants and Special Project Award and the 2024 IAM Creativity Grant from the Howard County Arts Council. In 2025, she was awarded the Post-Graduate Residency at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Through meticulous folded and constructed paper forms, Park translates processes of accumulation, repetition, and care into sculptural installations that reflect resilience, migration, and the layered narratives of cultural identity.
