Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1989, Sean Sweeney is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in materials typically used in contemporary architecture. By combining these elements with natural components, he creates introspective moments for viewers to reflect on their everyday interactions with these materials.
Sean earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011 and his MFA from the Mount Royal School at the Maryland Institute of Art in 2014. He now works in Exhibitions at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC and maintains a studio in Baltimore, Maryland.
He has shown his work in a variety of venues, such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Pauley Center Gallery, Richmond, the Target Gallery at the Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, the Fjord Gallery, Philadelphia, the Wayfarers Gallery, Brooklyn, Gallery CA, Baltimore, L’Oeil de Poisson, Quebec, Abington Arts Center, Jenkintown, PA the Delaplaine Arts Center, the Frederick, William J. and Pearl F. Lemon Gallery at Kent State University at Stark, Canton OH, the Dodomu Gallery, Brookland, NY and the Charles H. Taylor Art Center, Hampton. His work has been featured in Style Weekly and Richmond Magazine. Sean received the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Graduate Fellowship Award in 2011 and 2013, and in 2019, he was recognized as an Emerging Artist in the DC Metropolitan Area.
