Scott's profile

My art is an attempt to create images that can withstand durational viewing, in competition with television media, which can hold consumers attention to the point that it has achieved ubiquity. The paintings mimic a hallucinogenic response, which some have described as "3-D", similar to the 80's popular art phenomenon known as "Magic Eye". These works were created through an obsessional process, working on the edge of surreality, in the pursuit of honing a technique that helps to move visual culture forward.

There is commonality held between the pieces in this show but each one accomplishes its objective in a different way. The goal is to create a immersive visual environment of balance and uniformity with the variations of orthographical characters. Sometimes one finds a symbol they recognize, one that bears reference to a glyph or alphabetic spelling, and other times the characters are too mutated to bear such semblance. Sometimes there is something in the foreground, but often there is not and the eyes swim over the painting looking for a place to comport themselves. There is a kinship with topographical maps, or pictorial maze that offers little challenge but a refuge to wander in idleness. The colors frequently contrast causing glare or the 3-D effect, or the illusion of motion. Attempts are made to fit what amounts to a comprehensive style into existing genres of painting, such as the Self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh, or the imaginary natural picture of Henri Rousseau.

You are invited to stare at these full spectrum color displays as they ripple and shift, and demand such focus that you forget to blink, leaving your cheeks stained with tears.
