Philip Edward's profile

I grew up outside of Boston, MA, playing music, taking pictures and eventually moving into the city to work as a graphic artist. I get bored easily and I crave excitement; so I moved to New Orleans in 2002, I didn't realize how exciting it was going to get as I was still living in the city when Hurricane Katrina hit.

I moved to Baltimore in August of 2007 and was immediately struck by its quirky charm, its amazing people, and its incredible art scene.

Since moving here I've been published in over one hundred issues of What Weekly Magazine, I was actually the magazine's first contributor.
Mostly photo essays, but I've also written several articles to accompany my photos. My favorite "combo" pieces are artist profiles. You can see the collection here:

In 2010 I started my first book project with the author Rafael Alvarez. I was asked to produce full-page, black and white portraits for a history of a West Baltimore Recovery center named The Tuerk House. The book has the same name and was published this year in September.

By day I'm the Photo Editor for Catholic Relief Services. My main job is overseeing photo shoots around the world to show our donors our activities, I usually hire photographers and oversee their work, but I've also been able to travel around the world and document for the agency myself. It's been gratifying and humbling to be able to use my talent in photography to help people.

In addition to my photography, since 2009 I've produced a multimedia show named Instant Gratification. The show, a recurring variety show, has featured some of the most talented performers, artists, musicians, magicians, poets and filmmakers in the Baltimore area.

My passion is portraiture.

Thanks for being interested.
Phil
