Murray's profile
Murray Taylor is a painter who lives in Baltimore County and has kept a studio there for the past 20 years, before that he had studio space at School 33. He studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Towson University before receiving his BS with honors from Frostburg University. Murray has travelled America, and much of the rest of the world, creating quick paintings of the local color and light that he uses when making large paintings back in his studio. More and more, sky dominates his work; many also include seas, some include landscape, others are solely clouds. Some of his paintings approach straight color field paintings of light. Even when painting representational subject matter the technique is painterly and spontaneous, even semi-abstract, as the layers of thick and thin oil paint come together in these large paintings.
“I’m trying to create works that might be recognized as something beyond my personal experience - something that stirs a memory, a feeling, or nudges the viewer toward their own meditation. I'm trying to make paintings that get people thinking, and I'm not dictating what they think, just creating a space for contemplation.”
“Taylor’s are the kind of paintings that draw you in because they invite you to imagine the process of painting.” -SOBO Voice June 2013
