Matthew's profile

Matthew Hyleck is a ceramic artist currently living and working in Parkville, MD. Matthew earned his BFA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH in 1997. He is an artist-in-residence at Baltimore Clayworks, a nonprofit ceramic arts center, where he also teaches studio ceramics and has served as the Education Coordinator since 2000.

Matthew's utilitarian ceramics have received three Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Grant in Craft in 2018, 2011, 2007 and 2005. His studio work was featured on the December 2011 Ceramics Monthly cover and recognized in the May 2008 Ceramics Monthly as an “emerging artist”. Additionally he has completed visiting artist-residencies at Tainan National University for the Arts, Taiwan R.O.C. in 2005, Ohio University’s Woodfire Symposium in 2010 and Watershed Craft Center’s summer 2012 artists invite artists residency. In addition he has taught workshops in Columbia, MD, Lancaster, PA, Loveladies, NJ, Port Chester, NY and Nashville, TN.

I don't see myself deviating from making utilitarian pottery; rather, I do see my work evolving organically as a direct response to my life and immediate environment. Natural forms, textures, patterns and symbols find their way into my work. Working primarily within a family of glazes called Shino - an American variation on a traditional Japanese glaze - my goal is to create utilitarian pots for every day use; simple forms that speak primarily about functionality and the intimacy gained through daily use.

Matt's functional ceramics have been featured in invitational and juried exhibitions across the country.  You may view additional work, full resume and artist statement by visiting www.matthewhyleck.com.
