Mary's profile

Mary Ancel is an artist born and raised in beautiful Baltimore. She is a photographer and craftsperson, compulsively creating and re-creating as a means of therapeutic process and obsessive acquisition. Her work is inspired by the mystical phenomena of nature, the inevitable perishability of human creation and the deep-seeded complications of the family structure.

Mary is preoccupied with what came before: how objects, people and places used to be, and how they became what they are at present. Her fixation with history is deeply entangled with the tangibility of objects, and with the empathy that in embedded in each hand-crafted piece. She uses many types of media including photography, printmaking, collage, drawing, bookmaking, sewing and painting.

Through creation Mary seeks to visually manifest her living memory and active nostalgia. Her work reflects the collective and singular visions of the world and of those within it, and strives to bring what is seemingly lost back to life.
