Kathryn's profile

Growing up in Montreal, Iowa City, and Philadelphia, Kathryn Shagas studied music for
16 years before receiving a BFA in design from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Music continues to influence her work.

On walks near her home and studio in Baltimore County she is drawn to horses grazing in fields—their sensitive, quiet companionship and thunderous counterpoint of gallops, kicks, and snorts. She paints this scene in plein air and from memory,?expressing the energy and spirit of a particular moment. The rhythm of horse and landscape has become a metaphor for the patchwork of daily life.

Kathryn’s work is on exhibit at Sascha’s 527 through January 2015. Her paintings appear in private collections and were part of the Thrive exhibit at Jordan Faye Contemporary in November 2014. Her work was featured in July 2010 issue of The Palette magazine and included in an article on Bozzuto-Greene Art in the March 2014 issue of Baltimore Magazine.
