Joseph's profile

My work investigates the relationship between light, shadow, and color. Through the use of transparent materials, I create structures that allow light to pass through while casting shadows that define form and space. Color and light serve as the primary elements that establish mood, balance, and composition. Each piece is an exploration of how these elements interact to create environments that are both visually and spatially engaging

Originally from Pennsylvania, Joseph Gerlak received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has participated in group, juried, and solo shows at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Anderson Gallery, Delaplaine Arts Center, and Creative Alliance.  Joseph lives and works in Baltimore.
