Baker Artist Portfolios

My work investigates the relationship between light, shadow, and color within shallow space. Using translucent materials, I explore the convergence of painting and sculpture, creating works in which color and form extend beyond the surface into the surrounding space. Light and shadow become integral to the work, revealing and obscuring forms while challenging the viewer’s perception of what is physically present and what is optically suggested.

Space functions as an active element, shaped by the interplay of material, light, and shadow. These relationships blur the distinctions between surface and depth, positive and negative space, and illusion and reality. Color contributes to the spatial and perceptual dynamics of each work, establishing mood, balance, and visual weight. Through geometric abstraction, I seek to create an experience that engages both analytical observation and intuitive perception.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Joseph Gerlak received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He has participated in group, juried, and solo shows at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Anderson Gallery, Delaplaine Arts Center, Creative Alliance, and other exhibition venues.  Joseph lives and works in Baltimore.
