John's profile
I create objects that are a combination of photographic and non-objective elements, as well as occasional abstractions and figurative forms. The work also incorporates forms that are common products or artifacts with a deceptively non-objective quality; in other words, they may appear to be formalist works, but they are commercial artifacts like styrofoam packaging, printer cartridge pull tabs or other items. Sometimes these are presented as-is, sometimes they are photographic subjects. The photographs usually depict synthetic objects, natural subjects and themes are less common, but do occasionally appear. The photographic subjects range in scale from items smaller than an inch in any direction to architectural forms.
The objects either hang on the wall or rest on the floor and often incorporate photographic elements or textures. Several of the photographs are in frames I designed and fabricated myself, which unites them with the objects in the project. I try not to become complacent with my artistic approach or techniques, but it is simultaneously important to maintain a level of both technical and thematic continuity in the artworks. The works convey certain themes, but there are no finite messages in any given work. Juxtaposition of styrofoam, cardboard packaging and various other commercial byproducts with various architectural subjects is one of the more enduring themes.
