While earning his electrical engineering degree from Purdue University, JIM OPASIK worked as an assistant chef. The culinary experience has contributed to the inspiration and use of materials in his current work.
JIM OPASIK's fascination with the animal world is reflected in the content and form of his art. He is rewarded by the smiles, laughter and appreciation from the viewers when they recognize the repurposed kitchen objects that went into creation of the sculptures.
Collaborating with his wife, assemblage artist, Mary Opasik, he has worked on sculptural projects such as "Violent Toy Turn-In" and "New Ways to Play Day" in Howard County. The result of the project is SERPENT For PEACE, installed permanently in the lobby of Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC.
JIM OPASIK's art was featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not!", a Turner Broadcasting T.V. series. He has exhibited in museums and galleries nationwide. Opasik has participated numerous artist-in-education programs and served as Past President of Artists' Equity Association, MD Chapter. Born in Chicago, he moved to the Baltimore Washington area where he turned his Catonsville, Maryland home into his art studio.
He is a now a retired electronics engineer from Northrop Grumman and devotes his time to art and volunteering in the community. In 1995 JIM OPASIK was awarded Westinghouse Community Service Award for outstanding personal contribution to the arts.
