Jean's profile

ARTIST’S STATEMENT: My major interest has always been three-dimensional art. After traveling in the Far East in 1969-1970, I developed a strong interest in crafts. I began working with fabrics and creating soft sculptures in 1973. Animals have always been a primary focus providing an endless challenge to get the feeling and character and humor, but other subjects also creep into my work. Most recently my interest in Japanese dolls and other figures have given me new subject material. Over the years the pieces have evolved from being totally soft to more elaborate work requiring armatures. I often use found objects such as lamps, crutches and pool cues in constructing the armature. Adding tie-dye, paint, Xerox images and recently mosaics to the fabric sculptures have kept me wanting to create more. I hope the whimsy in my work is evident and will bring a smile.
