Jack's profile
Jack Novosel (b. 1992, Cleveland, Ohio) lives and practices in Baltimore, Maryland. Novosel is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in painting, drawing, and sculpture. They use a variety of media to create color-popping groundwork for nuanced narratives, centering on the study of body language as they are related to emotions and animal iconography.
After graduating with their BFA from MICA in 2015, Novosel worked on homesteads in Alaska, Georgia, New Mexico, and Washington through World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), and returned to Baltimore in 2017 to focus on growing their art practice in the Baltimore community. They practice art full-time and have shown their work in solo and group shows in Baltimore, NYC, and London.
Novosel’s practice explores the interplay and tension between wild-ness and domesticism, combining mythology and animism with their experiences as a non-binary/trans* artist to challenge traditional structures of gender and family. Their work embraces a classical fusion style, using bold and playful primary colors to engage and captivate the audience. Through their art, Novosel encourages viewers to reconsider their connection with nature, power, and self.
