Herman M.'s profile

Baltimore native. City College High School '49. U.S. Army 1952-55. Coppin State College '78. Married/divorced. 3-children + 5 grandchildren. Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam war activist 1961-73. Numerous employments, including a self-employed design business in which I
sold grand opera t-shirts and tote bags to opera houses around the country. I've entered the contest in three (3) categories, as follows. VISUAL ARTS: Features my photographs of sky phenomena. In many cases I have used Mother Earth to frame and lend perspective. Underlying all of my photos is my studied acquaintance with both the celestial sphere and my camera equipment.
PERFORMANCE ARTS: Featuring a 5m28s video of one of my "Baltimore's Street Corner Astronomer" performances in Fells Point. I have been street performing with my astronomical telescope in numerous Baltimore venues for nearly twenty-five years. My performance has three (3) goals:
1) offering the general public a maybe once in a lifetime opportunity to view a beautiful celestial object through a good telescope, 2) to educate (per my ed. degree from Coppin!), in which regard
I give out a lot of "planets facts" etc....especially to young people, 3) like all street performers,
at performance end to find some $$'s in my "Contributions Welcomed" hat. In addition, I derive a huge amount of personal gratification seeing how much pleasure I bring to my lookers! WRITTEN ARTS: "Epiphany at Persepolis" hearkens back to my 1930's childhood, as well as to the early history
of Baltimore's landmark Senator Theatre. See accompanying Sun ad of 10/01/39 announcing the
theater's first film!
