Frances's profile

A native Washingtonian Frances Borchardt worked for over twenty-five years as a photo editor in the magazine and newspaper industry. She credits this career choice for developing an eye for visual storytelling.

An avid traveler she has toured Europe, South America, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Travel photographs turned closer to home when she moved to Churchton, Maryland in Southern Anne Arundel County. She soon became enamored with the water views, wildlife, sod farms, and tobacco barns that surround this rural crossroads on the Chesapeake Bay. Straight photographs of South County evolved into multiple image collage as she began incorporating photographs into antique printers type cases, juxtaposing subjects to create a window into this time locked community.

Borchardt’s photography has been reviewed in The Washington Post, profiled on Maryland Public Television, and featured on National Public Radio’s Art Beat. In various juried shows her work has received awards from Judy A. Greenberg, director of The Kreeger Museum (Washington, DC); Sue Spaid, executive director of the Contemporary Museum (Baltimore); Katherine L. Blood, curator of Fine Prints, Library of Congress (Washington, DC); and gallery owners Carla Massoni, Carla Massoni Gallery (Chestertown) and Norman Parish, Parish Gallery (Washington DC).
