Ed Hrybyk is an upright and electric bassist, composer, arranger, and educator emerging from Baltimore, MD. Ed graduated from Baltimore School for the Arts in 2006 where he studied classical bass with Laura Ruas. In 2010, he graduated from the University of the Arts where he received the Jymie Merritt Bass Award.
In 2016, Ed made his debut as a bandleader and performed a collection of original compositions with his band, the Bright Moments Sextet. Encouraged by the positive response to his music, he recorded 9 of his 19 compositions in 2017. Recorded and mixed in Waverly at Heartwood Sound Studios, the album features exclusively Baltimore musicians. Ed celebrated his CD release in August 2018 with a full performance at the Creative Alliance.
Ed is an extremely versatile player who has worked with a myriad of local bands such as, The Bumper Jacksons, Ultra Faux, Hot Club of Baltimore, Arty Hill, Son Tres Y Mas, and Unity Reggae Band. In addition to these bands, Ed has performed alongside esteemed jazz musicians such as, Tedd Baker, Victor Provost, JS Williams, Lena Seikaly, Elijah Jamal Balbed, and Olivier Kikteff.
In 2018, Ed began teaching at his alma mater, Baltimore School for the Arts as the school's Jazz Program Director. He continues to make strides to move the jazz program forward at BSfA in his 7th year as Jazz Director.
2020 brought the pandemic, but Ed didn't miss a beat. He spearheaded two outdoor live music series during the Covid-19 pandemic, the "Charm City Porch Concerts" and the "Baltimore Pop-Up Jazz Jam." Both series continue in 2025 for their 6th consecutive year with the help of local donors.
Ed is still actively composing and is working to release new original music in 2026.
