Don's profile

I feel like I've been taking pictures of people nearly all my life.  Whether it's a street or editorial portrait, the images are rarely formal and create a unique opportunity to really see another person up close.    It's that intimacy, even with people I've never spoken to that makes portraiture uniquely different from other forms of photography.  I like to work in series that are focused around a location or a particular attribute.

One of the first was my Known:Unknown series where I made environmental portraits of people that I knew well and others that just I ran into during the course of my day.  I approached the process of making images of each group in the same way, and employed the scientific method to see what differences appeared between the two sets of images.  Testing how much connection I could capture in just the moment.

Lately, I've been traveling into different places and spending time there getting to know people, talking and making portraits.  These portfolios are collections based on the locations and I hope they convey a bit about the universality of the people in each place.
